Game History:
The
first City County Football Game was played on August 26, 1955 at
Ratcliffe Stadium in Fresno. The game has continued every year
since. To our knowledge, the game is the longest running high school
all-star football game in California.
The game has been played at several locations
since its first game at Ratcliffe stadium, including Bulldog
Stadium, Lamonica Stadium and Buchanan High Stadium in Clovis,
Sunnyside High, Grizzlies Stadium and Central High School’s Deran Koligian Stadium. For about the last
10 years, the attendance at the game has ranged from about 4,500 to
6,000. Many of the players in the game have gone on to play in
college and some have taken their talents to the professional ranks
of the NFL. Over the 50 City County games since 1955, the City has
won 27, the County has won 20 and there have been 3 ties. The other
7 games were between the North and South. Last year's game was won
by the city team by a score of 27 to 17.
There have been several different organizations
that have assumed the responsibility for the game. The Fresno 20-30
club started the game in 1955 and then in 1964 the Central
Foundation was formed to put on the game. In 1994 the Boys and Girls
Club of Fresno County became the beneficiary of the game and several
members from their board of directors became involved in the game
and remain so today. The last change took place in 2001, when the
Optimist Club of Greater Fresno become responsible for the game, in
it's 9 years of operation, the Optimist Club of Greater Fresno has
turned approximately over $400,000.00 plus, representing the net profit of
the game, to
the Boys and Girls Clubs of Fresno County. All of the game workers
from the Optimist Clubs in Fresno, the Riverpark Rotary Club, Sierra
Pacific Orthopedic & Spine Center and the game officials from the
San Joaquin Valley Officials Association are volunteers. The sponsor
for the 2011 game was Horn Photo, along with several other
co-sponsors. the 2011 game, included 14 city and 24 county
designated schools that were represented at the game by their former
players. The estimated attendance at the game was approximately
4,500.
Each of the designated school football coaches
provided a list of their best graduating players to their all star
game coach, from which he will select a maximum of 48 team players
for the 58th City County All Star Game. The selected players will be
obligated to 8 days of practice prior to the game and a visitation
to Children's Hospital of Central Valley. This year's game will be
on Friday, June 22, 2012 at Veteran's Memorial Stadium on the campus
of Buchanan High School. Kick off at 7:30pm. the main sponsor for
this year's game is Horn Photo.
